You are so very right to question the entire adoption process - as really - it's become just one big industry.
It certainly looks after the adoption agencies and lawyers being this way - yes??
Really - a hell of a lot of the money currently payed for adoptions SHOULD go into therapy and post adoption counseling - for adoptees and first mothers.
There is a whole heap of loss and sadness in relinquishment and adoption.
But no one really wants to hear that - do they?
While the adoption agencies and the lawyers keep making the big bucks - why would they stop such a great money making scheme??
They certainly hold all of the power in the way in which adoptions are carried out to this day.
Sad really. |

Some of the money that adoption agencies charge adoptive parents goes for health care and housing for the expectant mother, classes for and screening of the adoptive parents, and counseling. A lot of the money goes for advertising for and recruitment of "birth" parents (hey - if adoption is such a great option why do they have to spend money convincing women to relinquish their children anyway?)
Some of the money is plain old profit. Adoptions agencies are businesses - not government social services departments. They exist to make money. They charge huge fees for healthy white infants because the market is there. Want a discount? Adopt a special needs baby or an AA baby. Yup - sure looks like a business to me.
Yes, I have thought about it. And "no" I don't think it is okay for anyone to profit off adoption. The adoption system in the US is sick and broken. |

I see your point, but I think it is to not encourage women to get pregnant so they can make money off selling their children. Can you imagine how horrible that would be? :( |

Agencies charges fees because it is a business they have to pay their workers just like any other organization, and pay for the programs they may offer. That said I know there are places that do sell babies, heck there are birthparents that have kids just to sell them. A lot of people pay top dollar for white healthy infant, that’s typical through private adoption. |

They don't "sell" babies. They do have to charge fees to offset the salaries of their workers, plus any health care issues the child may have in their care, checkups, and to do background checks of prospective parents. |

there are unscrupulous people in the world who would continually have babies simply to sell to the highest bidder. this bidder could be a paedophile, or an organ harvester. Agencies are required to do background checks and try to ensure, as much as possible, that the child is going to a home and a family where they will be nurtured and safe. |

i see your point.
maybe letting a LEGAL adoption agency 'sell' the baby is safer because they investigate and approve whether or not a baby would be good for certain adopters. if you sell yourself, your judgement might be a bit clouded, not all people make good choices, you might give the baby to a family that might not take care f the baby. if an adoption agency do it, they have standards to know whether a family or couple will really take care of the child.
i hope that answers your question :) |

As the first person said.
And also at an agency they go to a lot of trouble looking for someone to adopt the child. It's not SELLING your baby, per se, they are paying for services rendered. Big difference. They do the paperwork, they are in charge of the case, they meet with families etc. Being emotionally involved would make mothers quite a target also, trying to "sell" their own baby. |
