Why is it that you have to pay to adopt?

shouldn't they be happy that someone is willing to take responsibility and put their money out on someone else child instead of the state having to put them in foster care and pay the people money.

I agree 100 % with you. I think they should have all the background checks and clearances...etc. they need to do to make sure the child is adopted into a nice loving family but to pay for a child just doesnt make sense. I do understand they have fee's that need covered...like robert said but it would be in the childs best interest to be removed out of the system as fast as possible. Some people cant afford to shed out all that money and they really want to adopt. More kids would be adopted and in loving families if it didnt cost an arm and a leg.

Simply put, because it is a business.

Because, especially in the case of newborns, adoption is not about finding homes for needy children. It's about finding children for needy homes. It's an industry.

You have to pay one way or the other. There are homestudies to be done, background checks, work to find pregnant women wanting to place and matching them with families. Work to make sure all the parental rights are terminated appropriately so the child can be legally adopted. if you don't pay for your own adoption the cost will get passed on to tax payers - that is just not going to happen. There are a lot of people wanting to adopt who are willing to pay, and there is a cost associated with adoption.

Who is this "they" you speak of? Any of the private agencies who do adoptions have expenses in the form of office staff, social workers, doctors perhaps, managers and others who don't work for free. They also have lawyers who need to be paid for their time, court paper filing fees and other expenses. Many of these private agencies, at least here in Canada, also have foster care programs that need to be sustained as well. Now, the amount of those fees is up for debate but thats a whole other issue.

If someone doesn't want to pay then they can do an adoption through public foster care. There are no fees involved in adoptions through that mechanism since your tax dollars are already paying for it. Otherwise, it's the private system and any costs that go with it.

I agree. However, even with a non-profit agency there are fees associated with personnel, processing, retaining a legal services, leasing a building, paying employees salaries & benefits, etc. Of course, a for profit business fees will even be higher.

I've thought that a couple times myself. I don't have an answer but I'd love to hear what people have to say about it.
