Why is there a minimum age requirement for adoptions?

In China, you have to be 30 or older.
I think in the Philippines, you have to be 27 or older.
And I think in Mexico or South America, you have to be 25 or 26, not sure.
I'm not planning on adopting any time soon, but it may be a possibility in the near future. I'm in my mid twenties so age wouldn't be a problem. However, I'm just generally curious. What does age have to do with it?
And they said that in most of them, you have to be at least 16 years or so older than your child/
P.S. I know that people won't probably know the answer, but I'm just fishing for other opinions on this on which I will ultimate just have to ask the agency/ies. Additional Details Wow,the last three answers were a bit standoffish and rude weren't they? lol.

Each country has their own laws as to whom can adopt. They set any law they see fit. While it may seem odd, generally speaking, people who are 30+ usually have more stability to offer to a child. Some countries even have weight restrictions...so that people with unhealthy lifestyles can't adopt children from their country. |

Same reason there's an age requirement to being a good mother if you fall pregnant. (Which we determined last week to be 75.)
You can't possible know what's good for you, you need the help of "other people" to determine whether you would make a good parent or not.
Besides how will you pay the fees if you are young? You need to be older for them to consider you financially stable. |

It varies by country and the reasons also vary by country. Some want to make sure you are established in life and cultures like china value the wisdom they believe comes with age. |

I would guess that they really want someone that is focused and settled with their life. These kids have been put through a lot their whole lives so I think they just feel more comfortable for a couple who is a little older, more experienced, settled down, etc so they know they will be taken care of and not be regretted in a few years. Now I know their are younger couples that would be more capable of taking care of a child than some older couples but I would say for the majority older couples would have a better handle on things.
Think about if you had to give your child up for adoption and it couldn't be anyone you knew, all you could pick is the age range, what would you choose?? I think I would be right there with the agencies on this one!!
Good Question. |

There is a minimum age in the US to.
That is asking why are there rules, or driving age or drinking age. Each country picked a number that to them was suitable to parent. Yes you can be a parent naturally much younger but should you. They picked when they thought a person should be most stable |

I think the general idea is that older people are more stable and mature and will be able to provide more to a child. I dont always agree, but do think people should be mid-twenties at least to be settled in a stable home/relationship and be able to care for a child.
Its what they consider to be "in the best interest of the child"
China is very big on age, the older you are- the wiser and more respected you are. |

Umm, for the best interests of the children, d'ya think?
These kids are human beings who do have rights you know, and who have suffered a tremendous loss, and some have special needs that REQUIRE an adoptive parent to be mature, stable, and CAPABLE of taking care of those needs. It's not like going to the animal shelter and picking out a cute little puppy, this is a COMMITMENT and it will take WORK.
Perhaps you should do some reading up and educating yourself on the effects of adoption on adopted children...loss, grief, attachment disorders, and really understand what it is you'll be getting yourself into. It's not all butterflies and apple pies.
And it would be really, really off to have a very young parent adopting a much older child. The relationship would be more like a sibling one instead of parent-child, and that does not do the child justice. |

Ideally, anyone who could adopt would be older, more settled, financially stable, and in a long-term married relationship.
