Will there be problems?

My husband and I are considering adopting a child from Russia. We currently have two biological children.
Our main concern is my husbands prior record. He has a domestic on his record from 10 years ago when he was 19.
If we are open about this is, is there a chance we will still be considered for adoption.
There is nothing else that from what we've read would cause an issue.
Thank you

Too bad Guatemala shut down. They were allowing anyone to adopt. It didn't matter that there was so much corruption, adoptions were free flowing. Thank God they finally put a stop to that one.
Do yourself a favor, have your own baby. The Russians aren't going to hand over one of their children to you and your criminal husband. |

Um, yes, it will (or may) be a problem. I'm not sure in the case of Russia, but I have worked in DCFS in the past, helping kids in foster care who were waiting to either go home or become legally free for adoption.
The problem we would have is that the issue is a 'domestic' which is a crime that is directed toward another human. Please don't get upset, I'm not saying "physical", I'm just saying "direct". In contrast, a shoplifting case, for example, would not be as big of an issue.
I don't know your husband's situation and I'm not judging him, or you. I'm just letting you know what I know about families who apply to adopt when any adult in the household (including adult children) has a record.
I'm glad you are planning to be completely forthright about it. Anything else would destroy your chances to adopt from anywhere. I don't know how it will work out with regard to adoption from Russia. I would tell you to be prepared for disappointment though, just in case.
Good luck! |

Please adopt from America. There Are so Many here, in MANY states that need homes, the amount is staggering.
Its sad, the adoption rate is declineing here because of out of country adoptions. So many children need homes. I was one of those children. |

It is very likely to be a problem, yeah.
The best thing you can to is to talk to a lawyer about applying to have his record expunged. After ten years, it might be possible.
The worst thing you could do is lie about it. A criminal background check is run before you're allowed to adopt. The prior conviction will be found in that check. If you weren't honest about it, just that lie alone would be enough to raise major red flags.
Don't try to hide this. The best way to resolve this is through legal channels. |
