Would adoption reform be possible without. . .?

access to high-quality:
--medical care (including dental, vision and mental health)
--daycare
--education
at little or no cost?

Are we, people who want to keep natural families together, obligated to be voting for universal health care and systems of care that include housing and food for those who need it?

I am not arguing that all relinquishment happens because of lack of money (my children's did not), but I do know that much of it does. In fact I would argue that several cases where children are taken by the state would come down to economics.

Is adoption reform possible right now as we do not have government systems that can truly provide for families who need help? Is it a "choice" to relinquish when poverty is the possible result of keeping your child?

My intent is not to stir up anger or animosity, but rather to examine more fully the recent question about what adoption reform meant to everyone. I started thinking about some of these larger concerns. I'm just wondering what we would really need to have a system that would allow true choices for those who want to parent their children but are prevented becuase of financial concerns.

Personally I am all for a universal health care system. There are too many people like me that are uninsured and cannot seek adequate medical care because of that. Yesterday I was in a car accident and was unable to seek treatment for a sprained foot because I lack health insurance and would not be able to pay the high doctor's bills.

I think that lowering the costs of medical care and making daycare and education more easily available to everyone would help get rid of a lot of the reasons kids are relinquished. Not only that it would give those who are trying to coerce women into relinquishment fewer reasons to do so with. I think that everyone can benefit from a universal health care system

We should take care of everyone in our country, but the problem is what about death, where do children go? What abut abandonment, who are the parents, where did they go? I am against adoption, but we need something to happen, I am just 13 so I don't know how this would occur but it must. We should institute health care for all. My mom had a heart attack last year, over 150,000. I can't exactly see how anyone can afford that but, yes adoption reform should come with bonuses for our entire nation.

Politically, I personally favor a small government with very little social intervention. That is, of course, part of a larger political ideology that is in no way directly tied to adoption.

However, if anyone should receive welfare, it is the poor. At our current point in history, the rich are the largest recipients of welfare. The recent bailout is just the tip of that iceberg. This should be a source of national shame.

Adoption as we know it was instituted at approximately the same time as social welfare programs. AFDC came later, but the social security system was put into play before adoption became an entrenched social institution. Government intervention into the family has NOT improved the strength of the family. (I feel a Reagan quote coming on here!) "Government is not a solution to our problem, government is our problem." (Too bad he didn't practice what he preached.) At the very least, the government should immediately stop subsidizing adoptions for the rich.

Given our current financial system, it would be of great benefit to natural families if they were given financial assistance. If corporations cannot operate without government welfare, why should a young, single mother be expected to do so? It won't solve the problem, but it will improve the immediate situation, and it may be necessary for reform at this point in history.

Having a child is a choice not a right.

How's this for reform...

Can't afford a kid, don't have one.

There is no need for reform no need at all. We need loving homes for unwanted children. It is best for all.
