my husband and I like any other couples would give anything to have kids and start are family. I have a disease called pulmonary hypertension that is a hear/lung disease and because of it i cant have kids. My husband has diabetes. would us having serous medical problems prevent us from being able to adopt? what are other requirements to be able to adopt?

Good question. Your health situations could be a problem, but it depends on the state and the child. Call some agencies and see what their requirements are. Maybe a foreign adoption wouldn't have as many requirements. You shouldn't be discriminated against either. There are laws that protect you from that.
The state couldn't come take your child away because you and your husband have health problems if you gave birth. So it shouldn't be any different. Diabetes is a common illness, that isn't a problem, and if they were to discriminate against you for your condition without cause, you would want to get a good lawyer! If your heart condition could cause you to pass otu while driving or collapse, that may be an issue, but you can always have help with you to ensure safety if that is an issue.
Go for it, adopt a child. |

It is very likely that those kinds of disorders would prevent you from adopting in many, many places. It would be unfair for the child to go into a home where they are likely to experience the debilitating disease and/or death of a parent. Adoption is about meeting the needs of a child. Not meeting the needs of the adopters. A child may be born into a home with such illnesses, sadly, but they shouldn't go from one bad situation into a situation like that.
It is a shame, and I am sorry that you and your husband are unhealthy. Perhaps you could volunteer for short-staffed organizations such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters or a children's hospital. |

It depends on how you want to adopt. Internationally you may not meet a country's requirements for health. However, if you want to adopt either an infant here in the U.S. or from foster care, it is a possibility. You need to call some agencies and talk to them about their specific policies. Where I work, as long as your doctor will write a letter saying that you are physically capable of parenting we would be fine. Your husband's diabetes is less of a problem since it's pretty common and as long as his doctor would verify that it's well controlled with medication, insulin, etc. we'd be fine with it. Not knowing more, I think you stand a good chance. |

It depends on where you plan on adopting from. Foster care, domestic private adoptions and international adoptions all vary. Adoption.com is a good resource for finding specific guidlines. |

As long as the medical problems are being controlled it should not be a problem. You might look into foster/adopt as I know couples who have adopted with serious health problems but they were under con troll and the doctor signed their medical forms indicating they were capable of caring for a child. |
