hi i was just wondering, does anyone have a rough idea how long it takes to adopt a child in the uk ?
as in a baby, and what can they decline you for ?

A long time and they can decline you for any reason including on medical grounds which includes being overweight and if a CRB check picks up on certain things such as anything adverse to do with children is the simple answer.
It takes a minimum of 8 months to be approved as you will need to be CRB checked, have home visits, have a medical and do a course. Babies are in high demand so there aren't enough babies being surrendered (3000 - 4000 a year) each year to meet demand hence the reason for a long wait. Anyway a mother can't consent to surrender until her baby is 6 weeks old and it takes 5/6 months in all before the adoption is finalized. It is much easier to adopt from foster care and if you're prepared to adopt a sibling group even easier but it still takes time before its finalized.

We adopted through a US agency. The approval process took 14 months and just two months after that we became parents.
Our waiting period was quite a bit shorter than usual because our daughter had drug exposure issues and not many approved couples at the agency were interested. (Their loss!)

If out have already been approved then you can have a child as little as a month. If not the approval process can take up to two years. They can deny you if your home is unfit or you cannot financially or mentally raise a child |
