I'm writing a novel where a girl's father is arrested, if her friends family wanted to take her in what would they have to do? Could they simply volunteer to take care of her, would they have to adopt her?
This would be a permanent thing, he doesn't get out of jail. the girl is also a teenager, I don't know if age has much to do with it, but I thought I would mention it.

If your story is set in the US, then the couple that wants to take in the girl would have to go to probate court and file for guardianship. They could send the paperwork to the father in prison and he could sign off on it (or he could disagree and they would hold a hearing). The family would have to have a home study done but this is less exhaustive than an adoptive study. Once they have guardianship of the child they have all legal rights but it doesn't terminate the father's parental rights. They can also get financial assistance through CPS to help with caring for the child. This is the route that most people take in a situation where they are taking custody of an older child due to the parents' abandonment/death/incarceration. Hope that helps. |

He could give temp custody or guardianship to her friend's family. And when he gets out he could get her back.That's how it works here. |

her age would have to be a factor in this.. the older she is the less she might want to be adopted.. and just have someone become her guardian. and in the way of a novel, a guardian might have more drama. |

You can go to the courts and file paperwork to become the Legal guardain
This is not an adoption but you are the childs legal guardian
If the only parent is placed in jail, the child would become a ward of the state and you can petition the courts to become the guardian.
