she lives near moscow, where there is a spanish embassy to make the application directly......but she believes that it will be difficult to be granted a visa, as she is 38, and her salary is not good ! thus the russian state, may decline, thinking if she arrives ( albeit legally ) she may stay on, illegally.......therefore meaning she will not only have problems with the spanish government, but may well not be allowed out of russia again, should she return ? ( in other words does she have the freedom to travel to spain and back, as and when she likes ? ) she works as a professional artist, so actually in average terms has a good income.

A visitor to Spain does not need a sponsor if he/she can proof adequate means of subsistence and can convince the consulate's personnel about his/her willingness to return to his/her country after the visit. The minimum proof of subsistence is €300 at least and €30 per day of stay.
You however provide contradictory information about means of subsistance.
First you tell "she is 38, and her salary is not good" and on your last sentence "so actually in average terms has a good income".
It is really hard to determine and answer your question based on this information.
To get a tourist visa for Spain would require to proof the ties to the country of citizenship which a good income would definitely be, on the other hand this is doubtfull based on your information provided.

with the information you gave she'll probably have problems to get a Schengen-Visa since there is no sponsor and the trip is not organized by a travel agency. the things you wrote about Russia itself - yes it could be possible that Russia denies to leave but not because the Russian government don't want her to travel the reason is saving the deportation costs for illegal which must be paid by the country of origin
