I am currently living in Korea and a Korean citizen.
I'm also planning to go to college in America, and as you know, I need a student visa to do so.
I was involved in paper works dealing with green card, but the sponsor (my legal parent) dropped off her sponsorship for a personal reason. And she said she would make sure that USCIS would not have any info about me as she takes everything back that she had given to USCIS.
Anyways,
Q1: If I am involved in some kind of paper works dealing with the United States, would it make my getting a student visa harder? (If my involvement affects, then should I wait until USCIS gives everything back to my sponsor?)
Q2: What should I prepare to apply for the student visa?
Q3: How long, approximately, would the whole process take?

- If you have materials/applications pending with USCIS, it might be difficult to apply for another visa type. It might be best to wait as that might lead to some confusion and unnecessary difficulties.
Q2: What should I prepare to apply for the student visa?
- First you must be accepted to a university that is allowed to sponsor student visas. Once you are accepted, they will issue an I-20 to you. You cannot apply for a student visa without the I-20 form. Additionally, you will have to show proof of funding (either a printout from your bank account or a notarized letter from your bank stating your balance). The proof of funding must show that you have enough funds to cover the cost of full-time tuition and housing for one year. You will likely need to submit this to the university when you apply for admission. The best things to do are:
a. Contact the university (or universities) you want to attend and ask their admissions department or international student department what they need from you in order for your application to be successful
b. Contact the local US consulate in Korea and ask what documents you need in order to apply for a student visa.
Q3: How long, approximately, would the whole process take?
- It can take several months. If you wish to begin in the fall semester you need to get the ball rolling asap. |
