Advice on getting UK citizenship?

My wife is an Australian permanent resident and is malaysian by birth. She got temporary leave to remain in the uk for 24 months after we got married. We now have a baby boy together and I'm in the process of getting an Australian visa so that we can all move out there permanently, but wont have it through before her leave to remain in the UK ends. Given that we have a child together (whose British) and I'm a Brit by birth, is there a way she can stay in the uk with permanent leave to remain without us having to pay the thousand pounds it would normally cost? It seems like a high price, given that if we didn't pay it, she would be kicked out of the country and my son wouldn't have his mum with him anymore. Cheers in advance if you can help.

i have searched the UK border and have not found any other way to extend her stay in the UK other than applying for ILR,
there no other small extension,of any sort.
she has to extend before her leave expires..
