Am I already a US/UK Dual Citizen (by descent) if I was born in the US to a British Father in 1986?
|
I've read a lot about becoming a UK citizen by descent but am really confused as to how to go about getting a passport and all that. Do I have to "register for citizenship" or do I just need to apply for a passport?
I'm 22 now and am planning on moving to the UK soon to work and live for a while. I was hoping that I could just apply for a UK passport since I seem to have citizenship by law.
It's a VERY confusing process.
Can anyone face me in the right direction?

http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en/passports/citizenship/registration-british-citizen
this is the link to the UK embassy in the US.(above)
read the page. you would have to register first as a UK citizen, need to bring all birth certificates(father,mother,yours,marriag... certificate)
passport of father,
you are an UK citizen by law,but still need to register and go on with the application of registering and then a passport,
it is not that difficult, just a bit time consuming, come back if you need more help? |

You are currently not a citizen of the UK, by law or birth.
The same happened for me. I was born in the US, but both my parents are foreigners. To apply for a passport (what I did at least) is you will definitly need the birth certificates of the US (and UK if avaliable). I'm not sure of English law, but you might be denied UK citizenship without their birth certificate. English law may require other papers, but I'm not sure what they are or might be.
If you have a British birth certificate, you will most likely be garuanteed citizenship. If you dont, they may require alternatives, such as residence in England, or your parent's marrige certificate.
Right now though, you are not a British citizen in any way. Having a British birth certificate does not mean you are born British. It means that Britain acknowledges that you have been born, wehter it be a foreign nation. |

If you were born in America to an American mother and a British father then I'm pretty sure that you're an american citizen. My own brother was born to american citizens but in Canada and so he is both an american and canadian citizen. As long as you haven't voted in america or joined the military (and I am assuming a public office also), if you have dual citizenship you should have retained it. I would get in contact with the British embassy in Washington, D.C. through telephone (or in person, most preferable) and ask them if you hold dual citizenship and how you can get a UK passport. I pretty sure that you're an american citizen but why not try and see. Here's the website to get in touch with the UK embassy http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en/passports/citizenship/ . Good luck! |
