American in Italy wants to go to India- How do I get a visa?

I'm currently working abroad legally in Italy. I'm an American who wants to go to India for about two weeks on vacation. Do I need to apply to an Indian embassy in America or will an Indian embassy in Italy be OK?

You may apply for a visa in Italy but it may take 4 to 5 days and an additional fax fee (â‚¬20) to obtain information from the Indian Embassy of your home country.
You need to apply at the Embassy in Rome if you are located southwards of Florence; otherwise the Consulate General at Mailand will deal with your application.
