Are the states really united?

If you don't think so, attack one and see what the others do. Like all families, we disagree on various things, sometimes violently, but in the end we have far more in common with each other than we do with anyone else. When push comes to shove, the various things mentioned in the other responses don't amount to much.

No they are not, if they were I would gladly live in California, but the holly-weird elite, political correctness and liberalism keep me far enough away.

Each state operates like an independent country, but is responsible for each others security and economic stability, which is where the federal government comes in where it is all distributed.

oooooo, good one! I would say, not most of the time. They have different political views, different governing laws, different tax rates ....I could go on and on....

How many of them have you visited?!?! If you spend some time getting to the people of any area in the US you'll that people are basically the same all over, some liberal, some conservative, but don't take my word for it, Get in your car and drive to another state for a visit, don't judge the people there by their state gov., after all would you like to be judged by yours!?!?!

Good question -- I think in some ways they are united
All the states want the US to be strong, economically stable, they want the US to show pride again, and not arrogance. The important basic things they pretty much agree on, it is the individual things that affect their states that sometimes is in disagreement.

Some states have international borders that can create conflict; some states have more population, some have severe weather patterns -- so this type of thing takes precedence in the individual state.

People are basically the same
I have visited all 50 states with the exception of Maine and South Dakota

Mabey you should be asking if all Americans are united. The States are just there to compartmentalize a large area and make it easier to govern.

Nothing is united even when they want us to think they are.
Neither the people is.
so the country ? No way.

there are different levels of the law
1. local laws
2. state laws
3. federal laws

Each unites each state in its own way.
