The logician in me says "not necessarily". You can have a U.S. passport (10 year duration), but be a former U.S. citizen (i.e. renounced U.S. citizenship and/or taken some other one). And if you claim to have lost it and don't surrender it during renunciation, you can find yourself in a situation where you own a passport but are no longer a citizen. |

It is possible to own a U.S. passport without U.S. citizenship. U.S. nationality is the determining prerequisite to obtain an U.S. passport. Most U.S. nationals are U.S. citizens as well, however, those born in American Samoa or Swains Island and their descendents with no other connection to the USA are U.S. nationals but not citizens (non-citizen nationals). They are able to obtain U.S. passports as passports only reflect nationality (American) and not citizenship (you can check your passport).
However the vast majority of U.S. passport holders are citizens. |

Actually you are a citizen if u have a U.S passport.....I dont have one but its just because i am "lazy"....But i guess i am going to need one if i am going to be going out of the U.S..
