Can I get a german citizenship?

My grandfather was from Germany. He moved to Cuba and married my grandmother, then divorced. My mother never inquired to see if she could get a german citizenship. She still has his german passport, and pictures, and if it is necessary we can get his birth certificate from Germany. I am currently a cuban citizen and a US citizen.

While the benefits of obtaining German citizenship through restoration are substantial, the German law dealing with the re-naturalization of former German citizens and their descendants is quite complex.

There are strict rules about who may be considered a German citizen and who may be considered a descendant of such a person under the law.

Furthermore, to file a successful petition, you must provide specific evidence that:

(1) proves that you were, or your ancestor was, a German national prior to having been deprived of citizenship between 1933 and 1945;

(2) proves there was a deprivation of your (or your ancestor's) German citizenship between 1933 and 1945;

(3) establishes that you or your ancestor acquired US citizenship after having been deprived of German citizenship; and

(4) proves that you are a descendant of the former German national.


The German Citizenship Project assists candidates in the evaluation of their family's German citizenship history. If we determine that your family is eligible, we meticulously research and collect all necessary evidence in the US and in Germany to ultimately file a successful petition for re-naturalization to the German government.
