Can I travel to EU countries visa-free with a UK student visa?

Hi, i am an international student in the UK and have a valid student visa. The UK student visa is officially in the form of a "Residence permit of the European Union" - Country: GB, type: student visa.
I hope you get what i mean. Since it looks like (and indeed is) one type of a EU residence permit, i am just wondering if that can get me visa free to the EU?

No. If you are a visa national (if you need a visa to enter the Schengen area) then you have to get one.
However, if you are going there on official business for your university or for an employer for whom you are legally entitled to work, then you are entitled to an EU permit under the Rush Portuguesa doctrine http://eur-lex.europa.eu/smartapi/cgi/sga_doc?smartapi!celexplus!prod!CELEXnumdoc&lg=en&numdoc=61989J0113 your employer can send you to work (or, seemingly, study) for up to a year in another EU country.
But if you're going for tourism, just get a visa. My daughter's boss is an Indian national who has unlimited leave to remain in the UK. He has to get Schengen visas. There are special rules for school pupils going on school trips. You don't seem to qualify for that. |
