Can I work in the US?
Find answers to your legal question.

Can I work in the US?

My long term boyfriend is a diplomat and is thinking of applying for jobs in the US? As we're not married would I automatically be able to work if I went with him or would I need to apply for my own visa (don't think I qualify as I have no degree!).

So your long term boyfriend is thinking about moving 3000 or so miles away? Even if he is a low level person who gets diplomat status (out of the millions) he should know enough to know how it works or at least ask somebody.

Are you not in a place in your relationship to work this out? If you come to the US and are not married you will have a super hard time getting a work Visa. But if you were married it would be a nonissue. Are you going to move so far with somebody who cannot sit down, marry you and make this all easy? I mean that even if he was not sure, but loved you he would make this all happen.

You will have to get your own visa, which is not easy as you'll need sponsorship fom a company that can persuade them you're the only one for the job. Or you can go over as a student- it's very expensive though, paying international fees.

They're very harsh with who they let in. For example, my mom had to get married to my dad in order to be allowed to live there with him and he is actually a US citizen (And she was even pregnant with his baby, which actually holds no weight, despite what happened in Desperate Housewives!) So they're not going to give you an easy time as the girlfriend of a non-American.

Best of luck, though, I hope you find a solution that works for you.

You, being an unmarried partner, would probably have to apply for a visa to work in the US. However, since you have an in at the embassy, you boyfriend, they could hire you, and you could work for them in the US without a visa, and have limited immunity as a member of the diplomatic corp of your country.

For more details consult your local regulations, and the U.S. immigration service for more information.

You need your own visa since you are not married.

Where am I?
You need to apply for your own, although I think your boyfriend could apply for you too and mention it with his application.

you will need to apply for your own working visa :
Employment Authorization

U.S. employers must check to make sure all employees, regardless of citizenship or national origin, are allowed to work in the United States. If you are not a citizen or a lawful permanent resident, you may need to apply for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) to prove you may work in the United States.

USCIS issues Employment Authorization Documents (EAD) in the following categories:

EAD: This document proves you are allowed to work in the United States.
Renewal EAD: You should apply for a renewal EAD six months before your original EAD expires.
Replacement EAD: This document replaces a lost, stolen, or mutilated EAD. A replacement EAD also replaces an EAD that was issued with incorrect information, such as a misspelled name.
Interim EAD: If USCIS does not approve or deny your EAD application within 90 days (within 30 days for an asylum applicant; note: asylum applicants are eligible to file for EADs only after waiting 150 days from the date they filed their properly completed original asylum applications), you may request an interim EAD document.
you did not mention in which area you ar now living ? this is the USCIS page in the USA :

Since you are not married you will not qualify to come to the US on a work visa with your boyfriend unless you find work for yourself and apply for a visa that way, which can be difficult. not having a degree would not have an impact on the visa process though. If you are able to find work in the US, you should be able to get a work visa of your own.
