Can i retain my UK citizenship if i become a naturalised US citizen?

Can i retain my UK citizenship if i become a naturalised US citizen?
|
My wife, a US citizen, is going to be naturalised in the UK next year. She can retain her US citizenship and effectively have dual citizenship.
I imagine the same is the case for myself if we ever decide to go and live in the US, i.e. i can become naturalised and not have to give up my UK citizenship.
Can someone please confirm if this is the case, and perhaps point me in the direction of something online that highlights the law.
Many thanks

The law dates from the abrogation of the Bancroft Conventions between the USA and Britain, and various German states. The British notion of nationality is "allegiance" and that does not change just because you take another nationality. Indeed, "perpetual allegiance" was one of the major causes of the War of 1812.
For the USA: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1753.html
For the UK: http://www.direct.gov.uk/RightsAndResponsibilities/RightsAndResponsibilitiesArticles/fs/en?CONTENT_ID=10015894&chk=sqQhAW
Bear in mind that your children born in the USA (or anywhere else outside the UK) will be British citizens (you should register their birth at a British consular office). But their offspring (your grandchildren) born outside of Britain will not be (unless the other parent is British by birth, registration or naturalization in Britain). |

When you are prepared to reside in the US, your wife petitions for you to come to the US as a Lawfully Admitted Permanent Resident. After you meet the residency, and other requirements, you may apply to naturalize as a US citizen.
You are not required to give up your UK citizenship.
