Unlike what the first responder posted, it's not "illegal" to use your foreign passport to travel. You should always use your US passport to enter the US, though.

Here's where you're going to run into problems: coming back to the US with a Peruvian passport. The immigration people won't let you in without a visa in there, and of course, since you're a US citizen, you can't get a visa.

How long are you going to be in Peru? You may wish to bring your US proof of citizenship along with you, and apply for your US passport at the Embassy in Lima. Keep in mind, they WON'T expedite your case, since you should have traveled to Peru on your US passport, but if you have a few weeks, they will process it at normal speed, and you can get your US passport to travel back to the US with.

When do you have to leave for Peru? I highly recommend that it's worth paying an expedited fee, to try to get your US passport before leaving.

I attached the State Department link on expedited passport service below.

Good luck!

Some good, but very incomplete info above.

Let's take your trip virtually:

You show up at the airline counter in the US to take your flight to Peru. They are required to check docs by law. You present a Peruvian passport. The airline rep looks for the copy of the I-94 to remove but doesn't find one. PROBLEM. You explain that you are a US citizen but can't prove it. The airline personnel is required to call immigration services over as you appear to be in the country illegally. Never mind that you are on your way out anyway. Bureaucracy at work.

So you see, you need a US passport to start the trip with. To EXIT the US, and to REENTER the US.

Expedited service on a new passport is about 2-3 weeks door-to-door.

The Dept of State provides a service in case of a life or death family emergency, but you must go to a Passport Agency in person:
"Life or Death Emergencies involve serious illness, injury, or death in your immediate family that require you to travel within 24-48 hours outside the United States. Customers must appear in person at a passport agency for emergency service and documentation of the emergency may be requested.
Please call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 (TTY/TDD 1-888-874-7793) to schedule an appointment at the nearest Passport Agency. Our automated appointment system is accessible every day, 24 hours a day.
If an appointment that will meet your needs is not available and you are calling from 6:00 a.m. to 12 midnight, ET, Monday-Friday, except federal holidays, please stay on the line and follow instructions to speak to a Customer Service Representative (CSR). The CSR will give you guidance on what to do. CSRs are available on weekends for limited hours to assist customers traveling within 7 days.
If an appointment that will meet your needs is not available and you are calling on a federal holiday or during hours the CSRs are not available, please call 202-647-4000 and explain your situation to the operator."

Passport agencies are located here:

There is also third party passport services. This service is expensive, but may be worth it for you:

If one has dual citizenship in the US, you must leave and enter with your US passport. Go get a US passport pronto.

You can use it. In general, it would be better to use your Peruvian passport for Peru, and an American passport for America.
