Can you chose where you want to go when working for the state department?

If I wanted a job working for some embassy overseas, like say, Germany or France or Brazil, could I choose to go there or do I have to go wherever they send me, even if I absolutely don't want to go there???

If you want to work for any government agency which sends people anywhere, even inside the USA, you go where they send you or else don't even think about getting another government job.

Nope. You have to take a test and it was one of THE hardest standardized tests I ever took, it includes a lot on budgeting and the economy, and then you're interviewed. If you get on the list, they send the "low man on the totem poll" wherever they're needed, which is usually some hell hole in Africa wherein you're lucky if you can leave the embassy grounds with a marine escort and return safely. Only after you've been there a while can you have a choice and those places go to the favorites.
