ABSOLUTELY IGNORE MANY OF THE OTHER ANSWERS HERE: MANY ARE INCORRECT.

Your child will be a US citizen, and entitled to US passport and social security number if:

- Both parents are US citizens, and one parent lived in the US prior to the child's birth

OR

- One parent is a US citizen and that parent spent a minimum of 5 years physically present in the US prior to the birth of the child.

You need to report the child's birth to the nearest US embassy. Once they establish that the child is a US citizen, they can issue him/her with a US passport, SSN and Consular Report of Birth Abroad of a citizen of the United States. Entire details are here: http://manila.usembassy.gov/wwwha003.html#Report

ONCE AGAIN, DO NOT LISTEN TO MANY OTHERS ON HERE. THIS ANSWER IS 100% CORRECT.

Feel free to message me for more information.

If you have gone through the steps and are now a US citizen.
There is no difference to native born or legal immigrant.
A child born to a US citizen while outside of the USA may claim US citizenship.
Then be able to receive a SS#.

SPMOSHER
I'm not sure what your specifics are, but my understanding has always been, regardless of where the birth takes place, that any American citizen's children are also American citizens. It's a part of the right of citizenship, but does not apply to aliens or nationals, just citizens.

Now how you get the paperwork taken care of, the American Embassy should be able to help.

AND TO TOM S:
I knew someone who was ignorant of his own rights to citizenship would spout off something like that.. you should be ashamed, you have no idea of this person, who they are, or their situation. If they are citizens, they have rights as citizens, as do their children, whether you like it or not.

Fascist!

Yes. I was born in Germany to American parents. I'm a legal citizen of America AND Germany.

his birth has to be legalized first at the consulat in the Philippines, otherwise anyone could get a social security card anywhere in the world.you may declare his birth if the father has recognized the child as his own.then he can get a social security card, not quite trough the embassy, but they would help with the acquition of a social security card.

Depends a bit on your status. You can transmit if you have spent at least 5 years in the US after age 16 (or been in the military or other US gov. job overseas) even if you are not married and the father/mother is not a US citizen. If your child is entitled to citizenship, you can get the SS# when you apply for a passport. And even if you can't transmit citizenship, you can apply for an immigrant visa at the embassy and your child will become a USC as soon as he/she lands in the US (once you have the visa, which can take months).

Even if you can't get a SS# you can get a taxpayer id number from the IRS if your child will be a dependent. This will allow you an exemption on your taxes.

If both parents are US citizens, then yes. Your child will have the right to claim US citizenship. Children of military, government workers and ex-pats are commonly born out of the US. There is a lot of paperwork that needs to be done, and the state department has a section of what to do. The link is below. Congratulations on your child!

nooooo it isnt an american

OR
no. she has to be born on american soil.

iRock
Nope, he/she'll have to become an American citizen in America, and then get his/her ssn. Soz.

Why not, what's one more illegitimate child on the welfare roles?

That is after all what you're REALLY asking isn't it, whether or not you can get money from the gov't for getting knocked up by a U.S. citizen.

In reply to Mosher, I say B.S.
Every day, Mexican nationals sneak over the border to give birth in order to obtain welfare benefits. The Phlippines is just a little too far to swim so she's ivestigating her options. I'll put my money where my mouth is, will you?
