Well, the mafia only really kill members of rival "families", and thats only when theres a dispute over something very serious.So its very organised. They dont plant bombs on planes or trains etc.They keep everything secret and expect that of every insider, as who wants every pain in the @ss knowing everything, blabbing and getting everybody jailed or worse (dead). I know this sounds ridiculous but sometimes their threats can be constructive. For example, my sisters husband was based in Sicily as an American naval man,so she would see certain things. This one time, she told me there had been a car accident and someone belonging to a mafia family (he was a son of a mafia gangster ) was involved and didnt have any insurance. The other party threatened the police, and were given the choice of that, or that members of their immediate family would have an unfortunate accident. Well, what would you choose? Personally, Id have said, "lets have lunch"!A few quid paid for by the uninsured drivers family to cover the damage, or your worst nightmare? Who would say no?
In that situation, It was resolved without interference from police, etc. So, I would say its very acceptable to have mafia around, and people tend to behave themselves better if they know the old guys might object to the stuff they might do in a neighbourhood where anything goes.

To me the mafia is organizes crime in which they gain money illegal. Example of this is gambling, murder, pimping etc
