Deregistering from Germany, place of residence.?

I am a born German national and moved to the United States in 2003.
My German passport expired a while ago and I want renew it here in the states. I read through the requirements and one of them states "Certified copy of the confirmation of deregistration from the German place of residence if it is entered in the current passport as the place of residence"
I never knew I had to deregister from Germany, I was 13 when I left.
How can I go about doing that? If I was under 18 do I still need to deregister from there? I am 19 now.

If you moved with your parents, then they should have unregistered you as well. In that case, you would just locate the local office and ask them to fax you a copy of those papers.
In case you were not unregistered at all, ask somebody in Germany to do it for you. Simply mail them a POA (preferably in German) and they can do it, then sending you a copy. |
