Do I marry in the US or Morocco?

Hello, I live in the US. And, my Moroccon boyfriend is in Morocco. If I decided to marry, can I marry him in the US? or, Do I have to marry him in Morocco? Just wondering..

Either. You can go there and marry, then apply for a VIsa to bring him here. OR you can go there and get engaged and come back and apply for a fiance Visa. Whichever route you take, be sure to have LOTS of evidence of a relationship. You should have lots of pictures, LOTS of printouts of conversations and emails, phone bills etc.

If he comes to the US you can get married in any courthouse as long as you have your birth certificates and passports. this will not give him the right to stay in the US though. When I (American) and my husband (English) got married it was no trouble.

Hello. My husband was in another country and I was in the US similarly. Since it takes a lot of time and money for applying for a visit visa for your fiance, we decided not to waste time and were married in his country. I moved there with him in his country and meanwhile applied for his immigrant visa. It was a very long process but we came back to the US just as our firstborn was 12 weeks old. So it worked out well for us. The wait time for an immigrant visa of course depends on what country you are in and the case load of the consuls and embassy officers. Also if there is any question about papers that have been submitted it could delay things too. So be sure that when you begin the process you have all your papers ready.

I would also advise you that you should keep love letters, cards, or any personal effects/correspondance regarding your relationship. It was really funny when we went to the embassy, we had at least 1,000 + pages of personal emails that we had exchanged between us. The agents face was like we are nuts. And of course you should have a large portfolio of wedding or engagement party pictures or a large selection of pictures of you together. Pictures with his friends or family are the most important so try to get his mom/dad or siblings in as many pictures with you as you can. They always give a list of items to bring for the first interview. But they will ask for more things when you come, so try to bring anything you can think of that could relate to your papers. For example, like if you have any outdated passports BRING every one. Because that is part of the paperwork to know which countries you visited etc. Pretty simple really.

Once its been submitted and the interview complete, you should keep calling on his behalf to check the status. Its also best for you to be present for all his interviews and you should have a very clear communication with each other. They will ask things like what did you have for dinner together last night, or what side of the bed do you sleep on etc etc. So just be sure that you are both prepared not meaning to lie exactly but you want to give the impression that you are very close.

Best of luck. But you should be ready to do some traveling and to be very very patient as it's a process that doesnt happen over night.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that applying for his visit visa in order to marry in the US would probably take at least 6 months more or less. The actual immigrant visa process for us took 1.5 years and we decided it was the least expensive and most time efficient way to go.

Of course you can marry him in the US and my advice to you would be to do just that.

If you are married in Morocco you will be subject to Moroccan law which, I can assure you, will give you far fewer options and rights than a US marriage would. Starting with divorce moving to finances and right on to the custody of children.

If your boyfriend did not agree to that, he has another agenda which, if I were you, I would avoid at all costs. Certainly you do not HAVE to marry him in Morocco and if he is telling you that you must, I would leave him faster than a race car at Indianapolis.
