I notice that UN officials have special passports, just wondering what their status is when they are travelling?

Yes, all diplomatic personnel have immunity from any crime while serving abroad, any crime including murder.

Yes they do, and the thing to remember is that "working abroad" for U.N. people typically means the U.S. (New York). They have caused a lot of problems in New York over the years including murder and many cases of drunk driving deaths, all without any problems for them.

They will have diplomatic status, and immunity in the country to which they are accredited, and may by courtesy, have something similar in countries through which they pass on their way to or from their assignment.
