A visa has ALWAYS been necessary. I moved here 6 years ago. I had to come on a tourist visa, and then my school got me a resident card and a work visa. The woman who said she didn't need one 5 years ago probably didn't realize it was part of her tour package. There is NO WAY she entered China without a visa.

You can get a visa for one month, and then extend it for up to 3 months. If you work here, your work visa is usually good for exactly one year. It is now a multiple entry visa, thankfully, because when I first came, we could only get single-entry visas and had to apply for new ones every time we wanted to travel, including travel to Hong Kong.

I'm currently pregnant and will return to the US to give birth. I will not be able to bring my child back with me unless he or she has a visa.

Absolutely, you need a visa to travel to China. I don't think China has an agreement with any country where they waive the visa requirement, including Taiwan, interestingly.

You no longer need separate visas for separate districts, except Hong Kong. You can travel freely around China with one visa. However, you can only travel to Tibet by going through a CHINESE tourist agency. Agencies outside of China are not allowed to arrange travel within Tibet. Some US agencies probably have relationships with Chinese agencies, so you may not even realize you are going through a Chinese agency.

Yes, you need a visa.
Devaraj is wrong, Americans can travel to almost all countries in the world without visa except communist countries and a few Muslim countries. All you need is a passport and a return ticket.
