The answer to your question is: maybe. British citizens are in an agreement with the US known as the Visa Waiver Program. This means you do not need a visa if your passport fits the requirement for the program.I know this seems stupid, but there are new rules regarding what sort of passport you hold [technically, if it has certain machine readable parts, etc...] I've attached the link below. If this still doesn't help, your best bet is to call your local US Embassy and ask them, most times they'll let you come in and take a look at your passport and let you know.
