No. US citizens traveling on US passports do not need a visa to visit within the Schengen Area (of which Italy and most of the EU is a part of). US citizens are given 3 out of the preceding 6 months to visit within the Schengen Area. This means that you can visit Italy and any other country within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in a 180 day period.
