Does anyone know how long it takes the visa section of the American Embassy to clear a query?

We made my application for the permanent visa in this country.
I have had and cleared the interview at the Embassy.
They had a question and need for documents on my wifes affidavit of support.
These were provided with my passport 21 days ago and seem to have landed in a black hole.
I am just getting - we are busy and its all on a case officers desk who will get to it as quickly as possible.
Does anyone know how long this might take and are there ways to expadite it.
My wife is now in the USA and I am in limbo here as I now have no passport.
Any help or experiences would be appreciated.

This may shock you, but the case officer was not just sitting at his/her desk, drinking a cup of coffee, waiting to take care of your problem. The fact that your documents were incomplete means that the application was taken out of the normal processing flow - it will take some time to re-integrate into the process. Do you have any idea how many people submit incomplete/illegible applications, then expect the officers to make all the necessary corrections? Feel free to call if you have not heard anything in the next two weeks. If you need a faster answer, just remember, it is very quick to say "application denied!".
