Emergency Visa to India? Whats the process, where to apply?

currently i hold a british passport but i am of indian origin so i use to have indian passport which has now expired. So can i still get emergency visa if i provide documentary proof for emergency or do i have to go and surrender my indian passport then apply for emergency visa? if so how long do high commisson of india take to process and issue surrender certificate, can they do it quicker if they are given proof that emergency visa is needed.

Yes you will need to obtain a Surrender Certificate as it has been made mandatory in the recent past by the Indian government.

Cancelling your expired Indian Passport and issuing you a Surrender Certificate is a matter of minutes, even if it is not an emergency travel to India.

However, I am sure they will do it right at the window, alongside processing your Indian Visa on your British Passport, to be sure do carry your emergency-related documents to the Embassy.
