F-1 student applies for schengen visa in the U.S.?

i'm in the U.S. with the f-1 visa. I just made an appointment with the Italian consulate in new york to apply for the schengen visa and in the confirmation letter, they said i need to have a valid visa and a valid i-20, on their website they said they only accept applications from legal residents. Thing is, my f-1 visa will expire this June but the appointment with the consulate is not until july, however, i'm still legal resident in the u.s. because my i-20 is still valid. am i eligible to apply?

Well, unless US law has changed, student visas remain valid as long as the holder is still studying in the US, even if the visa has expired. Since your student visa is still valid, you are still legally resident in the US and are still eligible to apply for the Schengen visa, although some clarification may be needed at the consulate. However, this will mean that when you go to Europe, you will be denied entry to the US upon your return and will be forced to reapply for your student visa in your home country.
