Finding a career in foreign affairs/public diplomacy?

Hey folks.

I recently graduated from UCLA with a degree in American Literature & Culture. My career goal is to become a U.S. Diplomat, so accordingly, I took the Foreign Service Officer Written Exam last week. If everything goes well, I'll be working as an FSO in about a year's time. But there's no guarantee I've passed, so I need to plan for the future anyway.

My question is: what sorts of jobs would be suitable for a recent college graduate looking to start a career in foreign affairs, without a Masters degree? I scoured the USAJobs, Dept. of Defense, and Army Civilian Careers sites and applied to some appealing jobs there, but was wondering if anybody has any suggestions of some careers I might not have considered yet; possibly one of you folks knows about a common (or not-so-common) point of entry into this facet of the political world that I'm currently unaware of.

I have ideas as to where I would plan on attending grad school were I to make that decision, but right now, I'm just looking for career suggestions.

Thanks!

You could join the military, with a 4 year degree put in for OCS and become a Defense Attache Officer performing embassy duty (protocol, dignitary visits, etc.) abroad.

Talk to people and alumni in your department. If you've taken any business classes, you may want to try a job in marketing and advertising/consulting. They're always interested in what Americans as a whole think, and you have expertise in that.

I hope that this helps!
