Forgot to hand in I-94W Visa Waiver (USA)?

I went to the states when i was 16 and was told to keep the little green card safe. So i put the card in my suitcase but was not informed that i would have to hand it back in.
So my suitcase was loaded onto the plane and the lady at the desk said i may have a delay next time i go to the states!

I completely did'nt think about the card until i renewed my passport and since im going back at the end of the year i dont want to send it in jus in case theres a backlog?
ANY IDEAS
HELP???
