Getting a Machine Readable Passport?

How can I apply for one and how is the process differ from the one for a conventional passport finally how to identify one from the other?

All US Passports now being issued are machine readable and normally they are also Biometric passports with a chip in them that includes identification information, typically a digital image of the passport photo.

Machine readable passports are required by some countries (primarily the US) for admission via visa waiver or expedited visa/entry processes or standards.
A machine readable passport will have the format shown at:

A Biometric passport will in addition have the unique biometric symbol on the passport cover:

Just apply for a US passport, it will be both.

If your passport is still valid, just wait for it to expire and apply for a new one. Chances are it will now be a machine readable passport. The difference between the two is the chip embedded in the front of the passport that contains all information about the passport holder. They are sometimes called biometric passports too.


The Weird One!
Machine readable ones have a little chip in the back page and from what I can see with mine it is the only difference but my eyes are not trained so I could be missing something and you just apply for a new passport because all passports and now in this format!
