My boyfriend is Colombian and I am American. We want to get married, but he wants to be able to study and work here in the U.S as fast as possible. WIth that said, is it better to just marry now on the tourist visa, or to go for the fiancee visa? What the -/+ of each? Thanks!

While it is possible to be in the US on a tourist visa, fall in love, and suddenly get married - and then apply for a change in status - if it is determined that you determined to do this, then it is visa fraud. In order to avoid suspicion, it's best to go ahead and apply for a fiance visa.
Another point - don't get married until after entry into the US on a fiance visa has been completed. Punishment is pretty harsh if you enter the US on a fiance visa, but aren't qualified (i.e. already married.) |

Get a fiance visa. If he enters on a tourist visa, he has to return to his own country to await processing of a spousal visa. Since marrying on a tourist visa triggers a marriage fraud investigation, it can take 2 or 2-1/2 years to get a spousal visa, and he cannot re-enter the US until it is approved.
To attend school, he'll have to wait until he gets his conditional green card, or else he has to obtain a foreign student visa. |

If you do get married on a tourist visa you can get some unwanted attention. go ahead with the fiance process, its going to be safer and it gives you a little more time to think about it. plus on a tourist visa our boyfriend is not going to be able to work or go to school. |

Get a fiancé visa.
Marrying on a tourist visa will only attract unwanted attention from immigration. It will make it seem like you married in a rush for one thing, which is not a good thing to show them. When you get a tourist visa, it is explicitly for being a tourist, so any immigration department practically anywhere gets suspicious if people marry during the time they're in a country with one. |
