Help with F1 student Visa and family issues?

I came here a few years ago and I got my F1 student visa for only 2 years even though I was a freshman student. My visa has expired but my university has given a new I-20 uptil my graduation which means I am legally allowed to stay in the country until i graduate. I really want to visit my family in summer but apparently, if I leave the states, i will need to apply for a new visa before I could re-enter and risk the chance of not getting the visa and not graduating. I just dont know what to do. Why am I being put in a situation where I have to choose between family and education? when i spoke with the international student office, they clearly told me I do stand a high chance of my visa being rejected as my brother came on student visa and now he is a legal immigrant and they would assume, i will do the same. The real fact is I love the education here in states, I want to graduate from the US but i dont wanna live here forever. I want to leave after I gradutate but I have nothing to show my ties with my home country. What do I do? Can I send my passport by mail and get my visa renewed before leaving or any suggestions at all?

You have to appear in PERSON for your VISA renewal interview. If you are in school and all is fine and have proof of attending and being in status without unauthorized employment you should be fine. You don't have control over what your brothers status is and they cant use it against you per se. If you don't have ties to your country how did they give it to you in the first place? Just double check with your country embassy or try a 3rd country application thru Canada or Mexico.

If you entered the United States on a valid F1 Visa, and you are in possession of valid, signed SEVIS I20-AB you are in status.

But, if you depart the United States (other than a short trip to Canada, Mexico, or select islands in the Caribbean for less than 30 days), you will be required to have a new, valid F1 visa to enter the United States as a student.

You will be required to apply for the visa outside the United States, as the US does NOT grant visas inside the United States. You will be required to meet all the guidelines, such as ability to support yourself in the United States, ties to your home country.

If you go home you must have to get a new visa.
