As soon as i finish high school i'm planning to go to college.Get a BS in aeronautical studies.After that join the military as a Navy/Air force fighter pilot.After i retire i have always sought to become an ambassador in italy since i'm half italian and have lived a good part of my life in italy to. What requires of me to become an ambassador? Do i get to choose where to work? thanks...

You can go via two routes, career Foreign Service Officer (might be late at 41-43) or get a political appointment (you need to be well connected for that route, probably more connected than an O-5 or O-6. If you are in the Foreign Service, you go where they tell you (it is very competitive, so if you get to that "rank" which is equivalent to a Flag Officer, you will accept whatever they offer), if a political appointee, it depends on how well connected you are, you would need to be very well connected for a place like Italy (like being a close friend of the President or Secretary of State).
Look on the Department of State web page for information on the Foreign Service. It is VERY competitive, and there may be age restrictions (but they may have a offset for military service) |
