If you want to be an ambassador, the best way to go about doing it is to become incredibly rich and then donate a lot of money to someone who wins a presidential election.
If, however, you just want to be a garden variety diplomat working overseas, things are a bit easier: you just have to fill out some forms, take two tests, fill out a few more forms, and then get your medical and security clearances. They don't specifically look for any particular major or educational qualifications (the formal requirement is a high school diploma or equivalent, but I don't think anyone without at least a bachelor's gets through the whole process), but to do well on the exams you should take courses in management, psychology, journalism, history, US government, international relations, economics and geography, and if you want to get a leg up on the competition learn a Special Critical Needs language like Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, Russian, or Farsi.
Take as many opportunities for leadership in extra-curricular activities and internships as you can find, since that will help in the second round of testing. |
