From 1993-2008 all of the US Ambassadors to Russia have been career diplomats, meaning they started their career in the Foreign Service and worked their way up.

practice, practice, practice. actually, some ambassadors to Russia have been political appointees, and some have been career Foreign Service employees, so there isn't one route to the position. frequently major financial contributors are appointed as ambassdors to various countries, but Russia is a very important and difficult relationship, so it takes a lot more than a heavy checkbook. |

Unlike the Ambassador to Bermuda, the Ambassador from the United States to the Russian Federation (it would be helpful if you stated the entire name of the country); must be a career diplomat. I would suspect to work for 20 years within the United States Department of State. You can never have done anything that could be perceived as illegal as the lower management passes rigorous testing and usually receives provisional low-level security clearance that takes six months. You may only hold U.S. citizenship to become an accredited diplomat. You may be an Honorary Conul General. For example, British national Sir David Tang, on the Board of Directors of First Pacific Company Limited which controls PLDT (NYSE: PHI) (PSE:TEL) is Honorary Consul General to Hong Kong, S.A.R. from Cuba. He is listed on U.S. SEC documents so I guess that the U.S. SEC has financial relations with Cuba as First Pacific is sold on the Hang Seng and in the United States, but not Russia. |
