How dangerous is to work with a tourist visa in Manhattan?

It is highly unlikely that you would be able to find any type of professional position without proper documentation. Regardless, it would probably be best if you went somewhere where you would have some degree of respect for the laws of the land.

Well first off if you land a job at a place that will pay you weekly,bi-weekly, they will want your SSI number for Fed/State/city with holding taxes. What are you going to do, make one up?? If you get caught by the INS you get to tour one of New York's lesser known attractions called RIKER'S ISLAND, and you even get a boat ride to get there. After that joyous excursion you will be brought before a not so jolly gentleman called a Judge, who will sign your deportation order, and you will never be admitted entrance to the shores of the US of A again.
I take it the country you are from runs lawless in the streets??

It's only dangerous if you don't mind being subject to arrest and deportation. 8 CFR 214.1(e) says that aliens in the U.S. in a visitor status are not allowed to accept any kind of employment.

A nonimmigrant in the United States in a class defined as a temporary visitor for pleasure may not engage in any employment. So, if you applied for the job, and the employer was excited about hiring you, he still could not legally hire you.

For you to work as a visitor would be a law violation which would lead to the necessity of other law violations such as working off the books, using a fake Social Security number, lying to immigration officers when they ask you if you've ever worked in the U.S., plus being ineligible for an immigrant visa in the future.

Immigration officials are authorized and required to look for any misrepresentations you might have made in order to procure a visa and enter the U.S. This includes having the Consulate send to them your original visa application in order to search for misrepresentations. Seeking employment after entry as a B-2 can trigger a presumption of fraud by immigration officials.

Some people do. They have no social protection, no minimum wage and if anything goes bad with their employer they have nothing left.
That's for the daily life part, as of when immigration has not kicked in. If you are caught, immigration has a lot of judicial power: it can prevent you from re-entering the US (temporarily or for ever), expect a bit of jail time, not for too long though.
If you are ready for this risk, consider the difficulty to rent a place, get a cell phone, etc... not to mention the fact that you will first have to go through immigration when entering the country and they have a nose for smelling the non touristic trip....

a lot of jobs are off the books so you can probably figure it to be safe, just dont go telling anyone and have some sort of story or proof about what you were doing for 3 or 6 months without working...
