It is a highly competitive process to become a Foreign Service Officer, you can be a specialist and work in the consular section and the requirements are less stringent but its still not an easy process.

The more education and experience you have the better your chances. Working for the State Dept can be a very rewarding career.

...after a lot of years of slogging in the trenches on various desks and assignments in the foreign service and being absolutely wonderful, tactful, productive and calm... and provided that you're fluent in at least one other language and have a decent uni degree... it wouldn't hurt to have an Influential Dad thrown into the mix. Consular service is the business end of diplomacy, so an econ major or international trade thingie would fit you for the fray. Good ties & shoes [for guys] wouldn't hurt.
