I need to renew it and have heard I need to goto the US post office....whats the easiest way going about this? I'm also in no rush as long as I get it renewed within the next 6 months.

probably go into the post office and just say "hey, i need my passport renewed" and then someone will help you go about renewing your passport. Its probably not that difficult, i'd say...
