How do I to get a Green card through an affidavit sponsorship?

Hello, I am from Peru. I have a mentor that I am not related to, in the USA who wants to sponsor me to come live with them so that I may be able to go to college there and explore other opportunities for my life. If I take the affidavit sponsorship papers to my embassy will that be enough to get a green card? Is there anything else that I will need?

I know a little bit about the immigration process, as my husband is British and has his green card.
Yes, non family member CAN sponsor you. As long as they meet the financial requirements. (at least that was how it was 2 yrs ago)
As for what you should take. Sponsorship form should be filled out. Evidence of the sponsors financial situation. Usually tax return for last 3 yrs, bank statements and job letter will do. You will also need your birth certificate. 2 passport photos. You will need to show some sort of communication between you and your sponsor. Phone bills, letters etc etc. (that just doesn't apply for marriage Visa btw)
I cant think of anything else right off hand.

No. Non-family members may not sponsor you for a green card.
If you want to attend college in the United States, full time, they can pay for that and the college can sponsor you for a student visa.
First, you enroll in a college, full time, as an international student. The college will send you a document called I-20. You take the I-20, the affidavit of support, and all the mentor's financial evidence to the US embassy and apply for an F-1 Student Visa.
You must attend school full time. If you stop attending you'll drop out of status and become deportable. |
