How do i retrieve my foreign passport back in the U.S?

My grandma went to the flee market and someone had obviously stolen her purse. She had her Vietnamese passport in her purse at the time and was wondering if there's a way she can retrieve it back in the U.S? as in who to call and what website or anything i can go to, to retrieve her passport back. we live in california.

Well the first thing that I would do is call the police and check the lost and found, because someone may have turned the purse in. Then if I wanted to start the ball rolling to get a new passport I would contact this person. Any form of identification of your grandmother would greatly help and if she registered her trip with the embassy or Consulate General would also greatly help. I know for American passports they give you a little card to write your passport number on just in case if you lose it, but I don't know if that is the case for Vietnamese passports. I feel for you and this is absolutely horrible what has happened.

How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Passport
As soon as you realize your passport is missing, contact the nearest police authorities, and Vietnamese Consulate, if an in Calif. You may be asked to fill out a DS-11 form, which is the standard passport application form. You are not required to know the passport number or issuance date to apply for a new passport.
If the passport is still valid, you must also complete the DS-64 form to report the lost or stolen passport. You be asked to report how, why, where and when you lost your current passport, what you did to recover it and what the end result was.
In emergencies, you may contact the National Passport Information Center (NPIC) for support. Call (877) 487-2778 to reach an operator Monday through Friday from 8 a.m until 8 p.m. EST; an improved automated system is also available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you want to find out the status of an application you can also make an inquiry via e-mail. |
