How does one become a citizen of Spain?

I love the U.S.A.,but my heart is in Madrid. I have dreamt of living there since my first visit almost 15 years ago, but in this post-9/11 age, I'm afraid that countries are beginning to 'hold on' to their natural citizens and deny those who aren't. There has to be a way!!

If you are a citizen of the US you can become a spanish citizen by naturalisation by if you had been living in Spain for 10 years
Spanish by origin: you can become a spanish citizen if you are a person of Spanish descent (e.g father, mother, grandfather or grandmother was/were born in Spain)
Spanish by residence:
You can become spanish citizen through residence in Spain if:
You are a citizen of a country that was a colony of Spain (e.g. Argentina, Colombia, Phillipinnes, Venezuela), as well as Portugal, Equatorial Guinea, Andorra and other few - 2 years
You are married to a spanish citizen - 1 year
As a US citizen, you need to give up your nationality, the exception of this requirement is for people of spanish descent or citizens of countries that were part of spain, and other countries such as portugal or andorra. |

Once resident in Spain for a certain time period, you have the right to apply for the Spanish nationality. The general requirement is a legal and continuous residency for 10 years.
In many cases, however, this period can be reduced to 5, 2 years or even 1 year. These cases include persons granted asylum, certain nationalities like South Americans, spouses of Spaniards and people born in Spain. |
