How does the H1B stamping process work ?

If I get my H1B approved this April and am issued the visa in October do I have to leave the US in order to get the Visa stamped and then re-enter the US or can I remain in the US until the H1B expires ? I am confused as to how this process works. Is it mandatory for me to leave the US and get my H1 stamped from another country and then re-enter in order to continue with my job or is the stamping required only if I decide to leave the US to go back home for a vacation ?

My lawyer told me, when I renewed, that I only need to get the stamping done when I exit the country and return. As long as I have the approved paperwork handy.

When you said you have an approved H1B Visa, did you already have one in your passport?

Did you receive a form from CIS that on the bottom has an I94 on the right side? If so, put that in your passport, when you exit the US and apply for admission, you will be issued a new I94.
