How does the whole passport thing work?

I want to travel the world, but i want to understand better the rules of passport renewal and stuff like that. For example I was born in Venezuela so i have a Venezuelann passport, but i moved here to the U.S when i was 10 yrs old, I became a resident of the U.S and my venezuelan passport expired, so if i want to go to Europe for example, do i have to ask for a permission from there or something or just show my green card or my Venezuelan passport!? this is confusing.
Or if i want to visit Venezuela do i have to renew my passport from there first? and if i do where do i do that in Venezuela or can i do it at the Venezuelan embassy in the US?

You cannot travel internationally without a passport. The aircraft carriers would not allow you to board an airplane without a passport (and a visa if required) since they would have to pay fines for transporting passengers without proper documentation. Your U.S. Green Card is not of any value in Europe.

As a citizen of Venezuela you would need a passport of Venezuela which must be applied from a Consulate of Venezuela in the United States.

The Venezualian passport will authorize you a visa-free stay for tourist or business purposes in 25 European countries which adhere to the provisions of the Schengen Acquis provided you meet the criteria for visa-free travel, which are in general holding sufficient funds to cover your stay and an onward or return flight ticket to your country of orign.

Provided meeting the general requirements you may stay visa-free for up to 90 days in a 6 months period in the following European countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France (to include Andorra and Monaco), Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy (to include San Marino and Vatican City), Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain (to include Andorra), Sweden, and Switzerland (to include Liechtenstein).

You may also stay in the United Kingdom as a general visitor without a visa providing you hold a machine readable passport which your new one will be. The duration is based on the discretion of the Border Agency Officer and may be up to 180 days.

Bulgaria, Ireland, Romania, and Turkey also grant visa-free entry for visitors of Venuzuela for up to 90 days in a 6 months period.

All you have to do is go to the Venezuela Embassy and renew your passport, That is all. To travel abroad, you must check with the country that you are going to see if you need a Visa.. Coming back to the U.S. is not problem because you are a legal resident.
If you are a legal resident ( Green Card) for more than 5 years, you can become an American Citizen and you do not need Visa to go in the majority of the countries of the world.
Even if you become a U.S. citizen can still have a valid Venezuelan passport...Eso se llama doble cuidadania.

Are you a resident or a citizen? I think you need to be a citizen to have a US passport (I'm not a US citizen or resident).

I would assume you need to renew your Venzuelan passport and follow the European rules for travellers from that country.

Hi Dani! A passport is your travel identification. You will need this to enter any country. Some countries will ask you to get a visa so you may enter their country. It all depends on the kind of passport you carry.

Two things. You can apply for naturalization as you seem to have been in the US for quite some time. After you become a citizen, then you can apply for a US passport. But this procedure may take a while.

If you are rearing to go soon, then just renew your Venezuelan passport in the their embassy nearest you. Now you may need a visa to enter some countries you plan to visit. You will now have to apply for one at the embassy of the country you want to go to.

You need a Venezuelan passport. Check with the consulate of the country you want to visit to see if you need a visa (it may be in the embassy of that country).
If you become a US citizen you will lose your Venezuelan citizenship. Venezuela restricts dual citizenship up to the age of 25 after which it does not accept dual citizenship. Due to the restrictions you would not be allowed dual citizenship before 25 and your Venezuelan citizenship would be revoked if you got another citizenship.
Admittedly a US passport will get you in more places without a visa but it's a trade off. You have to decide which citizenship you want.
Good Luck!

You need to get a U.S. Passport now and use that when you travel. It's good for 10 years.
