How long dose a security clearance last for?

Until your work that requires it ends. They are issued for an agency, not a person. When your work with the agency ends, so does the clearance.

They also have to be reviewed annually (at least the Top Secret ones do) and reinvestigated every 5 years.

Edit: I was kind of unclear about the agency thing. While a clearance is issued to a person, that person must be employed by a company or agency who requires the clearance. The clearance does stay active for a time if your work ends, but the access authorizations do not. The clearance may be reactivated upon employment for another agency where the clearance is required.

In other words, just because you want a clearance doesn't mean the government will investigate you and issue you one. You have to have a job that requires you to get a clearance to work and your clearance will be deactivated as soon as that job ends.

It depends on the security clearance you have gained and the form you have used.

I am definitely sure that SF-85 is one-time only (Non-sensitive)

SF-86 (Classified, Confidential, Secret, Top Secret) is 3 years.

Not sure about SF-85P (Public Trust).

If you are a canadian citizen it is best to get a pardon and not a waiver if this is what your are asking, pardons seal your record, where a waiver has to be re-applied, i think its 5yrs not entirely sure on exact number but somewhere in that ballpark.

Actually that is not true.. The clearance is issued to you not the company. Once you receive a clearance it remains active until it is time to re-investigate.(actually it stays active then too unless the clearance is revoked) that happens every 5-7 years. My husband has has a clearance for 16 years. He was laid off for a while and then worked some contract jobs for a while. All of which required him to have a clearance. All they would do was check to ensure his clearance was active. Now if you don't use your clearance for a while it will go inactive, and it would take you going to work for a company who required you to have a clearance for it to be reactivated.
