How long is a term for US ambassadors?

I'm just wondering. I'm really interested in being an ambassador and would like to find out how long a term is. it seems like there is no set limit.

Ambassadors as Presidential appointees serve "at the pleasure of the President" and can be dismissed at any time for any reason. In reality many are career State Department employees, and will serve until they are needed somewhere else or they want a stateside assignment for family reasons, etc. The others are political appointees and usually will serve as long as they want or until there is a new president.

True, there isn't any particular set limit. At the very least ambassadors usually change with new administrations, but even that isn't always true. Sam Lewis was ambassador to Israel under Carter and Reagan as they really liked him and asked Reagon to keep him on.
